The worldwide trend of corporate mergers and acquisitions has been a positive development in the intermodal shipping industry. This is because mergers and consolidations in the industry have improved the services, equipment and facilities of intermodal transporters. For instance, mergers in the industry have been one of the main factors for improved on-time performance, from 80% in 1997 to 93.4% in 1999.

E-business brings customer service to the forefront

The increasing sophistication of clients of intermodal shippers has made the industry take a good look at Internet-based as well software solutions. In particular, shippers want software and World Wide Web-based solutions that would tell them and their customers where their products are at any given point. In addition, providing an electronic notification of delay to shippers by intermodal providers is more and more becoming a standard practice.

Intermodal infrastructure impediments create a major challenge

The growth in intermodal freight traffic has placed increased pressure on existing intermodal infrastructure, so much so that efficient time management has become a must in total operations. Advances in information technology have been a big help to facility operators in developing intelligent communications for reducing traffic delays and congestion. Moreover, improvements to landside access have been made to ease vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
