Tobacco company stocks are expected to rise in value if mergers and acquisitions emerge once again as a trend in the industry. Some deals currently under consideration include Japan Tobacco Inc.'s bid to purchase Gallaher Group PLC, and Imperial Tobacco Group PLC's possible merger with Altadis SA of Spain.

KDDI's net fell in fiscal half

KDDI Corp. posted a drop of 22% in its group net profits for the fiscal half through September 2001. The company posted 6.69 billion yen in net profits in the period.
