Iran, Islam and democracy
Article Abstract:
Iran will hold parliamentary elections in Feb 2000, and thereis pressure for reform to allow elected representatives greater freedom and authority. Islam has become a less cohesive force outside Iran. Political Islam and democracy might be compatible, as is shown by the example of Iran. There are examples of bad government among Arab countries, but Islam is not necessarily the cause. The US and Pakistan trained and funded Arab volunteers to comabt the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, and this helped foster some Islamist terrorism. There are risks in Iran, but also reasons to hope that democracy can emerge.

Murder, most foul
Article Abstract:
Secular dissidents and liberal intellectuals have had hopes of increased freedom with Muhammad Khatami as president, but three writers who sought more freedom of expression have been killed. The president blames Islamic hardliners, while the conservatives claim that the US and Israel are involved in a plot against Iran, and have resulted from a move toward a more open society. The deaths have led to greater support from some quarters for the president.
