Island politics: opposition DAP sees its big chance in Penang
Article Abstract:
The island-state of Penang will be the chief prize in the Malaysian general elections tp be held before Dec 1995. The opposition Democratic Action Party, dominated by ethnic Chinese, has high hopes as Penang is the only state with a Chinese majority. Its leader, Lim Kit Siang, will fight fiercely for the chief ministership he has sought for decades. Most observers give the ruling National Front coalition the edge, however, thanks to redrawn constituency boundaries, a strong economy, and the deputy prime minister's Penang origins.

Poll hold
Article Abstract:
Politicians and others throughout Malaysia are showing the strain from the long delay as they await announcement of the elections that must be held by Dec 1995. Previously they have nearly always been held within four years, but that date passed 6 months ago. Parliament has postponed controversial bills, government actions and sensitive rate hikes are still in the wings, and the stock exchange is still in the doldrums with little hope of a rally regardless of an election announcement.
