Article Abstract:
The town council of Salzburg has approved plans to build a new congress centre for the Austrian city. Around Sch 500mn will be invested in the construction of a new glass, steel and concrete structure in the place of the old facility, which is to be torn down. The oval-shaped main hall on the first floor is to accommodate 1,400 people. The project includes an underground car parking facility and an underground train connection. Construction work is to start in autumn 1998 be completed in 2001.

EU/Austria: Austria lagging behind in competitive edge
Article Abstract:
Austria's high electricity costs for industry and telephone costs were amongst the factors reducing Austria's competitive ability, with it only being in eighth place in the European Union. Furthermore the EU commission took into consideration the proportion of older people in work, for this Austria was in 12th place. However, for income distribution, Austria was near the top.
