Japan's economy awakens, but may tire soon again
Article Abstract:
Japan is finally undergoing an economic turnaround in 1996 after four years of sluggish development. Some of the indicators that Japan is snapping out of its four-year slumber include increasing levels of capital investment, personal consumption and housing commencements. Rising wages are allaying fears of a deflationary spiral. Manufacturers, on the other hand, are enjoying the drop in the value of yen, making their products sold abroad to be more competitive. However, observers fear that political instability, the government's aggressive deficit financing and a fallout from bad-loan crisis could undermine the continued growth of the economy.

Japanese companies lose faith in nation's economy
Article Abstract:
Japan's tankan survey presents a grim prediction of Japan's national economic recovery as reported by Japanese firms. Analysts believe that survey results coincide with low consumer demand, higher inventories, reduced capacity utilization and high employment levels. Survey results prompted the rise of the dollar against the yen and the sharp increase of the national debt. The Japanese central bank administers the survey which is considered as an important short-term forecasting instrument.

Japan reports rise in GDP: export growth, investment point to recovery
Article Abstract:
Japan's economy expanded in the 3rd qtr. of 1996 as a result of strong export growth and capital investment. This indicates that the government should be able to meet its estimate of 2.5% GDP growth for the fiscal year ending Mar. 31, 1997. Analysts believe that the robust 3rd qtr. performance could signal sustainable recovery. They also say that the government can declare its efforts to stimulate the economy since 1992 a success.
