Joschka Fischer, Germany's reluctant statesman
Article Abstract:
The new German foreign minister, Joschka Fischer, is leader of the Green party which has members who oppose the deployment of German soldiers abroad and would like to abolish the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Fischer may face pressure from others in government, as well as opposition from within his own party. He supports the enlargement of the European Union (EU), and argues that Germany has a major role to play in achieving this. He will need to tackle a number of issues relating to European farming and the budget if the EU is to be enlarged.
