KARNATAKA BRINGS DOWN DIESEL PRICE BY 50 PAISE
Article Abstract:
The government of Karnataka has reduced tax levies like purchase tax and turnover tax and has abolished entry tax on diesel to reduce its retail price by 50 paise a litre with effect from May 16, 1998. The purchase tax has been reduced to 4 percent from 20 percent, turnover tax to 1 percent from 3 percent while the entry tax of 2 percent has been abolished. The state will incur a loss of Rs200 crore a year due to these reductions. (khr)

The rupee fell by 10 paise to 42.57/58 against the dollar in the forex (foreign exchange) market on January 4, 1999. This was due to the sustained purchase of dollars by leading companies like the Indian Oil Corporation and Reliance. These companies bought dollars to finance imports. The Indian rupee declined by 12 paise against the dollar on February 24, 1999 and closed at 42.56/58. This follows the release of the economic survey for 1998-99 which states that a weaker rupee would improve the export competitiveness of the country.
