Kim names cabinet, draws fire over some appointments
Article Abstract:
South Korean President Kim Dae Jung's choice of economic professor Lee Kyu Sung for the office of minister of finance was criticized by some economists and policy makers who believe Lee lacks the experience to guide South Korea through its current economic crisis. Kim Dae Jung's choice of Kim Jong Pil as Acting Prime Minister, the number two position, also was criticized. Other cabinet positions dealing with the economy were filled by Park Tae Young as minister of industry and energy and Park Chung Soo as minister of foreign affairs and trade.

Top party picks Lee Hoi Chang as presidential candidate

The ruling New Korea Democratic Party has chosen Lee Hoi Chang as its presidential candidate for the upcoming Dec 18, 1997 elections. The 62-year old politician is a fresh face in the country's political system and will be facing Kim Dae Jung and Kim Jong Pil of the National Congress for New Politics and the United Liberal Democrats respectively. Despite being vague, Mr. Lee's economic policies seeks to address deregulation and greater market opening.

Roh's arrest sparks calls for Kim to clarify any role in scandal
Article Abstract:
Pressure on South Korean Pres. Kim Young Sam continues to mount after the arrest of former Pres. Roh Tae Woo on bribery charges. The public outcry against Roh's massive corruption has been immense and many have raised questions regarding Kim's possible involvement in similar dealings. Some allege that Kim accepted money from Roh to help fund his presidential campaign.
