Article Abstract:
Japan's Economic Planning Agency has come up with its 12th five-year plan that focuses more on the quality of life of the typical Japanese than on the quantity of goods or services produced. The economic planners envision fewer work hours, more public expenditure on social services and infrastructure, enhancement of housing standards and a generally better milieu. The current aggressive stance of most Japanese corporations vis-a-vis overseas firms in is quest for a greater slice of the market will soon end, that is, if the economic planners had their way.

Stoking up inflation
Article Abstract:
Economic planners of the 1990s are no longer afraid of inflation. After the recession which has crippled the economies of many industrialized nations, policymakers are more ready to face the prospect of growth with inflation. At least, this development is considered a lesser evil to that of chronic stagnation. The focus is on reducing unemployment and countering the other effects of recessionary forces. The resultant decrease in interest rates, which generally lead to inflation, are no longer met with trepidation as before.
