Larsen & Toubro (L&T) increased its sales by 7 percent to Rs5,676.77 crore in 1997-98 from Rs5,304.74 crore in 1996-97. Its net profit increased to Rs531.44 crore from Rs411.35 crore. This hike was mainly due to its hiving off its construction equipment manufacturing unit at Bangalore to a joint venture with Komatsu. The company set up a cement plant to channelise cement to the south. The company now has a capacity to produce over 10 million tonnes of portland cement. It increased its cement production by 23 percent to 6.7 million tonnes in 199798. L&T's engineering projects and construction business has orders worth of Rs5,250 crore on hand as on March 31, 1998. The company's scrip is currently trading at Rs220. (khr)

It was able to export over one million tonnes of cement within two years of commissioning its Gujarat Cement Works. The company also has core competencies in engineering and construction.
