Lai seeks to ride cyberwave
Article Abstract:
Controversial Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai has acquired Paramount Publishing Group to serve as his stepping stone in listing his holdings in the stock exchange through the back door. Under the deal, Lai's Next Media International Holdings would inject its Web sites and weekly magazine to Paramount. In return, Next will have a 67% stake in the company. Minority stockholder rights will be accorded to Seapower International, the original stakeholders in Paramount. The backdoor listing has been viewed by Lai as a way to raise additional funds for his combined businesses.
