Latest model: will new constitution foster more democracy?
Article Abstract:
Thailand's new constitution is the fifteenth version since 1932 but observers are already arguing over and criticizing it for what they consider anti-democratic elements. The charter, which took effect in Feb 1995, will require 21 new draft laws to embody its ideals. Many of the changes it calls for may be merely cosmetic, and some engender disputes over the balance of power between the judiciary and the legislative branch. The charter calls for an election commission, a new administrative court, and MPs as ombudsmen.

Who needs democracy? Some call for unelected prime minister
Article Abstract:
Public opinion appears to be moving against democracy in Thailand and some commentators are suggesting a move back to an unelected government. This occurred after disturbances in 1992 when the monarch selected an interim government which was popular with investors. Others argue that democracy needs time to develop and are concerned about suggestions to impose a government. A solution needs to be found promptly due to disillusionment with the system and attacks on the government.

Democracy first: Army's refusal to back curfew shows political maturity
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh of Thailand has struggled to preserve his 11-month old government, although it is showing a new level of political maturity, which could improve the prospects for stability. Chavalit's position is still not secure and there is public pressure on him to step down so that a more effective, in unelected leadership could take over. A special parliament session in November will start the process of introducing new laws governing the election.
