Cigarette maker Philip Morris Companies Inc. has been subject to numerous cases filed against it due to the negative health effects of cigarette smoking. Thanks to a new legal strategy that has been spearheaded by associate general counsel William Ohlemeyer, and a lobbying campaign that now allows the company to save on the previously exorbitant costs for making legal appeals, Philip Morris has seen a 60% drop in the number of lawsuits it currently faces.

Race to Produce Safer Cigarette Heats Up

Tobacco companies Philip Morris Companies Inc., R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc., Brown and Williamson Industries Inc. and Vector Group Ltd. are accelerating research towards finding a safer cigarette. Their new product would have less chemicals, or, chemicals to reduce carcinogens, genetically modified tobacco leaf, or that is heated rather than burns when smoked.
