A Singapore-based Indian family has built an Asian corporate empire. The company, headed by Katar Singh Thakral, originally sold electrical appliances to Indian tourists in Singapore and developed into the largest distributor of Japanese-made videocasette recorders and televisions in China. In December, Thakral Corp. was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange. It garnered a 56%, $344 million increase in net profits over its past fiscal year. It operates in Asia, Australia, and the Middle East and includes ventures in real estate, hotels, manufacturing, warehouses, consulting, and finance.

Warning shot: Malaysia's economy needs a dose of discipline
Article Abstract:
Most economists believe that Malaysia's economy is still on track for significant growth in 1997, despite the recent turbulence with the falling ringgit and surging interest rates. However some analysts believe it is a warning and feel that some major projects should be slowed down. Others believe that increasing orders for semiconductors and computers since June, as well as the country's weaker currency, will help boost exports.
