Living well
Article Abstract:
Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia have managed to succeed even under the New Economic Policy strictly designed to create strong Malay businesses. This has been accomplished by Chinese who were willing to move into new growth areas as the government attempted to absorb more traditional areas such as plantations and mines for Malays. Seven out of the Nov 1995 top ten richest businessmen in Malaysia were Chinese with only three of those having succeeded before 1970 when the new Policy came into effect. Some of the areas sought by Chinese include car parts, telecommunications and computers.

Unwritten rule: for Chinese parties, that's 'don't rock the boat.' (includes related article in the Malaysian Chinese Association)
Article Abstract:
The Chinese political parties in Malaysia's ruling National Front coalition keep a low profile relative to the dominant Umno party, partly to preserve their place in the coalition. Still, the Malaysian Chinese Assn and Gerakan parties draw less than 50% of the Chinese vote in most elections, while the opposition, highly vocal Democratic Action Party often gets more. The subdues tone suits the govt's New Economic Policy and related efforts to lower racial tension by promoting the non-Chinese Bumaputra population.

Safety last
Article Abstract:
A Dec 1993 condominium collapse and a landslide on June 30, 1995 have convinced many Malays that the country must reinvent its mechanisms for overseeing construction. The landslide, near the popular Genting Highlands gambling resort, killed 21 and injured 18. It may have resulted from excessive hill clearing, which along with construction on steep slopes is a rampant problem. Tun Daim Zainuddin, an influential former Finance Minister, has fiercely criticized both developers and the govt for environmental harms.
