Local hero: champions of central control look to the past
Article Abstract:
China's treatment of 19th century scholar/military leader Zeng Guofan has once again moved from revilement to reverence as political events make him more appealing. Zeng organized Hunan troops in support of the Qing dynasty to crush the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement. Many observers see parallels between those events and modern China's crises, and Zeng's self-effacement and selfless support for the central government appeals to many. Some of communist China's founders also esteemed Zeng, who later fell into disrepute.

A probe in the back
Article Abstract:
The corruption probes that have been so useful for Chinese General Secretary Jiang Zemin are proving equally valuable for his enemies as purges sweep through the provinces. The Apr 9, 1995, death of Jiang's mentor, Chen Yun, may give them further opportunities. Talk in Beijing has city party chief Chen Xitong in trouble and about to be replaced, perhaps by Huang Ju, a former Shanghai mayor. Jiang's own protege, Jiang Chunyun, is close to many people in Beigang and Shandong recently arrested in corruption investigations.
