Thin ice
Article Abstract:
Asian fund managers admit that their markets inscrutable and often treacherous at present, and most advise making only limited moves to carefully selected shares. The region is now having more trouble attracting investment, thanks to a first-quarter plunge in most markets. The declining US dollar and Japan's plummeting equity market further roil the waters. Hong Kong has done relatively well, however, and some fund managers think that S Korea and the Philippines may provide good investment opportunities.

Time for a rethink
Article Abstract:
Asian financial markets are undergoing a transition after a period of underperformance. There is pressure on real estate. financial services and telecoms, which previously attracted investors. Institutional investors have time to study the market, but retail investors are sometimes buying on rumors and they have a major impact on the Hong Kong stock market. Speculation is being carried out by investors and high levels of leverage mean that any problems that develop are likely to be more serious.
