Lord of the rings: Peking's Olympic campaign rises to a crescendo
Article Abstract:
China's government intensified its bid to have Peking chosen on Sep 23, 1993 as the site of the year 2000 Olympic games. China, believing that success would boost its international prestige, undertook several actions to influence the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to choose Peking and not its main competitor, Sydney, Australia. These actions include the paroling of a dissident, Wei Jingsheng; the canvassing of IOC members; and the highly publicized staging of the Seventh National Games in China, designed to show the country's skill in conducting large-scale sporting events.

Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
Vietnam has been attempting since reunification in 1975 to encourage tourism and foreign investment. In particular, the former imperial capital of Hue and Danang, a provincial capital, and the temple complex of My Son are targeted for development. However, so much has been destroyed that is questionable whether tourists can enjoy Vietnam for its cultural history, rather than viewing it as a reminder of war's destructive power.
