MYSTERIOUS DISEASE COULD PRESSURE-COOK BASMATI PRICES
Article Abstract:
The prices of basmati rice is expected to come under pressure during 1998 as the crop has been hit by a mysterious disease. Over 30,000 hectares of basmati paddy sown in Gurdaspur district and 12,000 hectares in Amritsar district have been affected by the disease, according to the latest estimates of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. The disease turns the standing paddy crop into a pale colour within days even before the seeds are formed. The International Rice Research Institute in Manila has found the disease to be similar to the Tundru disease found in Japan and China. (ag)

SCIENTISTS FLAY RICETEC USE OF RESEARCH PAPER ON BASMATI
Article Abstract:
The scientific community in India is outraged at the misinterpretation of an Indian research paper by the American company, RiceTec. The said company has referred to Basmati as a generic name and is trying to patent it. Basmati denotes an entire set of experimental varieties of aromatic rice. This did not permit the American company to use the name in its trade mark and patent. Leading Indian scientists, Dr MS Swaminathan and Prof SK Sinha have accused RiceTec of quoting out of context from the research paper and misusing it to obtain patent.(uh)
