Make or break: state-election defeats could undermine Rao
Article Abstract:
The victory of Bal Thackeray and his Shiv Sena party in the state elections in Maharashtra will affect national-level politics because it will seriously undermine Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao's position. The election results will be announced on Mar 11, 1995. Maharashtra and its capital Bombay are the hub of the Indian economy and so a Shiv Sena victory can impact the national economy also. Rao has just reestablished his control over the Congress party and the dissident Arjun Singh has been suspended for six years. Rao also reshuffled his cabinet to introduce two new ministers.

A Hindu-Buddhist row
Article Abstract:
The temple of Bodhi Gaya in India has become a center of dispute between Buddhists and Hindus. While an Indian law has decreed that the worshipping place was to be accessible to adherents of both religions, Buddhists were the original owners and detest the idol veneration of the Hindus. Furthermore, the aspect of caste has become a thorny issue. Many Buddhists converts were former Hindu untouchables who left their religion to escape the scorn that fellow Hindus felt for them.
