Downsized: but the Thai top brass in no pushover
Article Abstract:
Thailand's military leaders no longer have the unchallenged sway they did from 1932 to 1992, but their power remains entrenched in politics and business. Top generals now insist that political problems can be handled politically, but serving and retired officers still are a majority in the appointed Senate, with veto power over legislation. Many mid-level officers are opting out for the business world, while the middle class powers a shift from military to economic might.

Military in retreat
Article Abstract:
Thailand's interim Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun recently removed three top military officers from their positions in state enterprises. The three officers were removed for their alleged corrupt management of the state enterprises. Observers say that the state enterprises involved, the Telephone Authority of Thailand, the Communications Authority of Thailand and Thai Airways International were the main sources of funds for the military during their Feb 1991 coup.
