Article Abstract:
France has recorded more concentrated winter tourism compared to summer tourism, with majority of it traditionally ski related. About 10% of the population stayed in French ski resorts in 1996, with the country boasting the largest purpose-built skiing villages in the world. As much as 15% of all winter holiday nights by the French is taken up by the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departements on the Swiss border. However, many northerners escape to the warmer Cote d' Azur region during the winter months as Paris remains one of the top ten destinations as travellers combine a holiday with a Christmas shopping trip.
