Marketing reform: Russian politics
Article Abstract:
It is unlikely that Russia under a reform constitution will form three stable political parties overnight. Voters are looking for doers and are enchanted with such novelties as the new commodity exchange. The reformists would be wise to develop several ideological wings so as not to self destruct.

Yeltsin retreats

The removal of Yegor Gaidar as Russian prime minister is a big setback to political and economic reform there. His replacement is a conservative who will attempt to bring back certain central planning policies and derail the drive to a market economy.

The Tiananmen temptation

Pres Boris Yeltsin should implement more democratic reforms if he wins the upcoming referendum. A more authoritarian presidency will not help Yeltsin overcome a recalcitrant parliament that opposes his economic reforms.
