Marriage prospects for Singapore women pale in comparison to job opportunities
Article Abstract:
Singaporean women today are better-educated and more career-oriented than their predecessors and many are taking advantage of the opportunities opening up for them. However, professional success does not necessarily translate into romantic fulfillment and a substantial number of accomplished women are still single. As they grow in financial independence, more Singaporean women begin to reject the traditional view of the woman as homemaker. The government, alarmed by the prospect of an aging population, has set up a state-run marriage bureau and offers hefty income tax rebates to encourage couples to have children.

Korea's middle class is stuck
Article Abstract:
Unemployment in South Korea has reached such a high level that not even degrees from top universities can guarantee job security. Blue-collar and white collar workers have lost their safety net as widespread bankruptcies forced companies to lay off enough workers to register a 6.5% unemployment rate in Mar 1998. Workers now have to rely on family and savings to tide them through.
