McDOWELL LEADS PROFIT SURGE IN UP GROUP Cos

Three companies of the UB group have posted higher net profits than 1996-97. The net profit of United Breweries Ltd, the flagship company of the group, has increased by 128 percent to Rs22.81 crore in 1997-98 from Rs10.02 crore. Sales turnover has improved by 17 percent to Rs301 crore from Rs257.17 crore. Herbertsons Ltd has achieved a net profit of 5.47 crore for 1997- 98 which is a 75 percent growth over Rs3.12 crore in 1996-97. Net liquor sales of Herbertsons has risen by 17 percent to Rs219 crore from Rs187 crore. Profit before Tax (PBT) was higher at Rs10.86 crore. The other company in the group. McDowell & Co saw its net profit rise by 346 percent to Rs12.98 crore in the 18 month period ended March 31, 1998. Net sales has improved marginally to Rs1,131.41 crore. Profit before tax (PBT) stands at Rs20.56 crore after putting aside Rs18.5 crore for non cash charges. (uh)

LOOKING BACK ON McDOWELL & Co

McDowell & Co, the flagship of the UB group, is presently a Rs800 crore turnover company with 22 percent share in the Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) market. It sells around 11 million cases of spirits annually in India and has 15 highly successful brands in whisky, rum, brandy, gin, vodka and exotic spirits. Five of its brands, No1 McDowell's whisky, No1 McDowell's brandy, McDowell's Diplomat whisky, No1 McDowell's celebration rum and McDowell's Old Cask rum, sells annually one million cases. McDowell is setting up a new bottling facility in Madhya Pradesh at present, through a subsidiary company McDowell Vitari Ltd. In the international market, the company plans to market speciality Indian liqueurs like a herbal liqueur from Rajasthan and liqueurs based on cardamom, tea, paan. (gsh)
