Melo Antunes
Article Abstract:
Melo Antunes was a Portuguese soldier who became involved in the Movimento das Forcas Armadas and its Carnations Revolution in Portugal in 1964. He played an important role in assisting the transition of Portugal from a right-wing dictatorship to a democracy, and in extricating Portugal from colonial wars in Africa. There was encouragement for the people to take part in politics as part of a wider program for Portugal to become developed and democratic. Antunes persuaded others in the military that power had to be ceded once elections had taken place.
