While in the midst of a long-lasting recession, president Menem is the target of harsh criticism from his political adversaries. Memem's brand of economic reform is blamed for Argentina's economic malaise and now he is about to introduce reform to the labor market, a prospect that worries the labor unions.

Unemployment remains high in Argentina despite an apparent economic recovery. Labor unions are increasingly dissatisfied with the government and staged two major strikes. Pres Carlos Menem, who is largely credited with Argentina's economic turnaround, is being blamed for the current unrest.
