Merger control
Article Abstract:
The European Commission's (EC) initial use of its power to block mergers has drawn much controversy. The Competition Directorate of the EC issued its decision to block the proposed joint acquisition of the De Havilland Aircraft Company of Canada by Aerospatiale and Alenia SpA on the grounds that the two European companies would end up totally dominating the turboprop aircraft market. This market dominance, the Directorate argued, would arise since Aerospatiale and Alenia SpA, already joint owners of turboprop aircraft maker Avionics de Transport Regional (ATR), would end up with a combined EC market share of 67%. The Directorate noted that such a dominant position in a key industry would be incompatible with the EC's common market policy.

An agreement on the establishment of the European Economic Area (EEA) has been reached by the European Community (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The EEA Treaty is expected to be signed and ratified by the 19 participating countries by Jan 1, 1993. The EEA's principal objective is to create a common market that allows freedom of movement for services, capital, goods, and people within the EC/EFTA area. The EEA's operations will be supervised by a committee of civil servants from EC and EFTA countries, while EEA affairs will be run by the high-level EEA Council of Ministers.

Defence on the defensive?
Article Abstract:
Defense industries in many countries are being affected by rapid changes in the marketplace. Corporations are decreasing their emphasis on manufacturing military equipment, while increasing the development of civilian applications. The Defence Manufacturers Assn in the UK is encouraging manufacturers to diversify. US aerospace firms are also attempting to diversify, but manufacturing civilian products can be expensive. Defense contractors in Western Europe will need to collaborate to survive in the marketplace.
