Microsoft sells Sidewalk to Ticketmaster

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. has reported that it plans to sell its Sidewalk online service to Pasadena, Calif.-based Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch Inc. in exchange for a 9% interest in Ticketmaster. Industry analysts, who have valued the acquisition at $291 million, said the deal signals a new strategy for Microsoft. Microsoft may attempt to imitate the interactive success of Internet-based companies such as America Online Inc. and Yahoo! Inc.
