Mixed prognosis
Article Abstract:
The Philippines has managed to avoid falling victim to some of Asia's economic problems. However, that does not mean that its economy is entirely sound. An economic slow-down began in the final quarter of 1997, and the most pessimistic forecasts indicate that GDP may not grow at all in 1998. If the economy weakens further, then there could be widespread bankruptcies and overall economic recession. It will be necessary to improve the country's balance of payments if it is to really recover from Asia's economic problems.

Can of worms: accounting spoils Philippine privatization
Article Abstract:
The Philippine National Bank has postponed a stock offering that would have privatized it, due to a dispute with the Treasury over 15.1 billion pesos, or $604 million. Bank President Arsenio Bartolome raised the issue out of fear it would scuttle the offering. From 1987 through 1994 the government has assumed 198 billion pesos of debt from state corporations, amounting to 25% of its total debt service and 10% of all its spending in that period.

Heart of darkness
Article Abstract:
Philippine industrialists are assailing the government for not doing enough to stop the chronic power failures and shortages stop production in factories. Brownouts have caused industry to lose $791 million thus far in 1993. Critics assert that the lack of power will do long-term harm to the country's economy. Pres Ramos's administration insists that plans for new power plants will reverse this situation.
