Modernity scales the heights
Article Abstract:
Former Welsh Water company Hyder has become involved in the construction of the Emirates Project in Dubai, which will consist of two of the tallest buildings in the world when it is completed in 2000. Hyder's acquisition of consulting agency Acer formed Hyder Consulting in 1993, allowing it to deliver expertise pipeline knowledge and construction skills. The Emirate Project consists of two towers, with the tallest offering 52-floors of hotel rooms and conferencing facilities, while the 53-floor tower will be occupied by offices. More than 3,000 people are employed on the construction project each day.

Thames planning guidance sets tone for urban design

The urban-design guidelines for developments on the Thames calls for design statements from local authorities, architects and developers before the granting of planning permission. Authorities are called on to encourage mixed use and plan for high quality designs, ensuring that developers prepare design statements and place emphasis on design quality. Design statements should incorporate assessments of scale, mass, height, impact on views and proposals for river-edge treatement.

Article Abstract:
Issues surrounding the design and construction of tall buildings in the UK are discussed. Tall buildings are subject to general planning guidelines, but designers should also look at sustainability and microclimate.
