India's agricultural sector has suffered from a recent drought. However, the country expects a normal monsoon and has increased its expectations for the national GDP up by 6 percent. Even so, the sector's economic importance is declining as other industries account for an increasing amount of the GDP.

The main focus of the economic reforms by the new government in India will be on agriculture and rural poverty. The government is planning to increase the amount of loans for farmers, improve electricity supply and institute a national job scheme for reducing rural unemployment.
