Morocco's brave new king
Article Abstract:
Morocco's new monarch, Mohammad Vl, has visited the Rif mountain region and has spoken of the Moroocan identity as being multiple, which some commentators have seen as including Berbers, Jews, French and Arabs. The region is seen as a center for dissidents, and smuggling of drugs and people into Europe, as well as migrants remittances have been important for the Rif economy. The advisers to Mohammad Vl argue that repression was the casue of resentment, but republican aspirations are likely to persist.
