Pressing concerns
Article Abstract:
Billionaire Robert Kuok, an ethnic Chinese and supporter of the Chinese government, bought a 34.9% share of the South China Morning Post, Hongkong's largest English-language newspaper, on Sep 12, 1993. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp sold its stake in South China Morning Post (Holdings) for $349 million. The sale generated concern that Kuok's partiality for the Peking government may impair the newspaper's willingness to print articles critical of Chinese policies. Kuok insists that the purchase had no political intent.

Catch a rising star
Article Abstract:
Rupert Murdoch's takeover of StarTV completes his global TV empire and sets the stage for a media battle across Asia. Murdoch's News Corp bought 63.6% of HutchVision, StarTV's parent, for $525 million, giving it satellite access to 45 million people in 38 countries. StarTV will now challenge Hongkong's TVB for the Chinese market; the former dominates the area but the latter has superior programming. The move follows Murdoch's recent bid to buy 22.2% of TVB.
