Munich Re is planning to expand its operations into the asset management industry. The strategy is designed to exploit the nascent retirement savings industry in Germany. Munich Re has been seeing declining profits at its traditional reinsurance business due to dropping premium prices. Hans-Juergen Schinzler, the chief executive of Munich Re, predicted a rebound in the company's overall profits and premiums in 1999.
