Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan, who is receiving treatment for cancer in the US, has named his oldest son, Abdullah, as his heir. In making this decision, he has cast aside his brother Crown Prince Hassan, who has been regent in King Hussein's absence. Prince Abdullah has shown himself to be a capable leader as head of the army's special forces. He is likely to have the support of the martial East Bank tribes, while his wife will appeal to refugees from the West Bank and Israel.

King Hussein's legacy
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordon, who is undergoing treatment for cancer in the US, has named his oldest son Abdullah as his heir. This decision was taken without any form of consultation, as has been common throughout King Hussein's reign. It would be advisable for him to focus now on gradually divesting most of his powers to parliament. If he fails to do so, then it may be hard for his son to establish himself as a trusted and stable monarch.
