NETHERLANDS: AHOLD'S STRATEGY
Article Abstract:
In an interview, Cees van der Hoeven, the president of Ahold, the Dutch retail group, pointed out that his company's priority strategic option is to create joint venture with good retailers in countries where it is opening stores. Its second option is to make a major acquisition or merger with another large retailer. Ahold intends to continue its growth, but not necessarily in Europe. He thinks that the arrival of Wal-Mart, the American group in Europe is going to stimulate the consolidation process at the European and world levels. Concerning French retail groups, he stated that these are quality companies, which have exported hypermarkets in countries where the food product sector is developing. however, the French group do not perform as well on developed markets such as Germany and the United States. He forecasts that there will be two alliances, one oriented towards supermarkets and one oriented towards hypermarkets, within which the supermarket specialist will also operate hypermarkets and vice versa.
