Nabobs of negativism
Article Abstract:
US public relations (PR) firms took an active role in the political campaigns for the May 11, 1992 Philippine elections. Dark-horse candidate Salvador Laurel employed the services of Black,Manafort, Stone and Kelly to help him plan means by which to discredit strong contender Ramon Mitra. Other US PR firms also tried to use their expertise for the benefit of their Filipino clients, but all of these firms did not have muchto claim in terms of tangible success. As Laurel pointed out, the American consultants understood the basics of Philippine politics but could never go beyond that.

The Sonia enigma: Gandhi's widow leaves pundits guessing
Article Abstract:
Sonia Gandhi, widow of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, criticized the current Indian government under PV Narasimha Rao in a speech on Aug 24, 1995, at Amethi, India. Her indirect rebuke of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao for foot-dragging on an investigation of her husband's murder deepened the rift between him and Sonia, rather than laying the groundwork for a reconciliation that would help her reunite the ruling Congress Party. She gave no sign of whether she or her son will officially enter politics and did not display any political preferences.

The uncertain victor: despite spotlight, Ramos remains an enigma
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres Fidel V. Ramos remains an enigma inspite of his many years as a high-ranking government official. Few doubt his ambition, as he was one who fought a dictator to help restore Philippine democracy. Nevertheless, decisiveness is not one of his best qualities, as many observed during his presidential campaign. Many hope that given his military background, he would be a more decisive leader than his predecessor. One of the areas where he is expected to make his major moves is in solving the long-drawn insurgency movement.
