Nat West shares jump as profit advances 49%

National Westminister Bank PLC 's announcement of a 49% increase in pre-tax profit for the first half of 1998 has prodded a 10% hike in stock prices. The bank's pre-tax profit went up to 967 million pounds sterling (($1.57 billion) from 648 million pounds sterling in the six months ending June 30, 1998. The after-tax return on equity of the bank went up to 18% from 12.5%. Natwest likewise reported the turnaround of its Coutts private-banking unit to earn 55 million pounds sterling in the first half of 1998 from a loss of 56 million pounds sterling on a same-business basis in 1997.

BNL profit soared to 175.6 million euros in the first half

Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) posted an improvement in its consolidated net profits for the first-half of 1999. The bank reported 340 billion lire (175.6 million euros) in net profits for the period. During the same period in 1998, BNL reported 82 billion lire. The bank posted a 5.1% rise in return-on-equity over the first half. Analysts believe BNL's ROE 1998 figures was between 5% and 6%.
