Article Abstract:
United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, favors joining European monetary union, in principle, though this will depend on the result of a referendum. The government will recommend joining if certain criteria are met. The press and currency markets see the prime minister's announcement as significant, though Blair's statement contains little that is new. There are a number of issues that could prove problematic, such as the rate of exchange between pound sterling and the euro that will be acceptable to both Britain and other European countries.

Roll up that map of Europe
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Conservative party leader, William Hague, has decided that the party should opposes membership of the single European currency. Debate on this issue will end once the leadership receives approval of its policies. The party is seeking approval by asking party members if they support their leadership and shadow cabinet on the issue. The membership does not like to be disobedient, and the vote will probably be won, but this will not mean that the party will cease to be divided on the issue of Europe.
