New crew on deck: Suharto revitalises his team to face new challenge
Article Abstract:
Indonesian Pres Suharto started his sixth term by naming a new cabinet dominated by young civilians who came of age after the 1945 independence generation of which Suharto is the last survivor. Prominent among these new civilians is VP Try Sutrisno who is one of several politicians who may be maneuvering to succeed the 72-year-old Suharto. However, Suharto has not indicated that this will be his last term. The rising Muslim lobby and economic questions such as Bank Indonesia's reforms are among the tasks that the new cabinet must deal with.

Advantage points: choice of Suharto's vice-president key polls issue
Article Abstract:
Several individuals from Indonesia's military and civilian sectors are seen as possible vice-presidential running mates for Suharto in the 1993 election. Among those identified are General Try Sutrisno, Minister of Research and Technology Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie and Home Minister Rudini. However, most observers agree that Suharto's choice could be instrumental to a successful transfer of power, since it sould be his final term. Some have even suggested that Suharto may step down even before the term ends.

Contested closure; court case tests official right to ban media
Article Abstract:
Indonesia may slacken it's stringent information and media control laws in the wake of an appeal made by former editor of Prioritas Surya Paloh. Paloh has questioned the legality of the ban of his newspaper, Prioritas and has been supported by a few editors. But lawyers claim that the 1982 press law cannot be challenged. Subjects such as ethnicity, religion, the ruling family and separatist movements are banned by the government.
