New kids on the bloc
Article Abstract:
A significant increase in its membership seems inevitable as the European Community (EC) tries to deal with the growing number of applications. Commission Pres Jacques Delors is urging for the planning of an EC structure that would accommodate 24 to 30 members. Among those who have already submitted their applications are Austria and Sweden. Expected to follow suit are Finland, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. The number of aspirants is expected to become even bigger considering the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. To cope with the membership rush, the EC reached an agreement with the the European Free Trade Association countries that created the European Economic Area (EEA). Many consider the EEA as a preparation for full membership.

Feast and famine
Article Abstract:
The market for commercial property in Western Europe has undergone a decline, with the exception of Germany and Eastern Europe. Germany is undergoing a commercial real estate boom due to the economic impetus of reunification, and many Western European developers are looking to Germany and Eastern Europe for economic opportunities. Eastern Europe lacks an adequate amount of commercial real estate, and Western businesspeople in Eastern Europe complain of the lack of quality office space. Most developers seeking opportunities in Eastern Europe are concentrating on Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary because they perceive the USSR, Romania, and Bulgaria as being too risky.

Sustaining Europe's poorer regions
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) is spending 25% of its total expenditure on regional development to carry out its objective of narrowing the economic gap between Europe's richer and poorer regions. To promote industry and infrastructure in needy regions, the EC will have appropriated Ecu61 billion between 1988 and 1993. The EC closely looks into each member nation's regional policies to make sure that aid is appropriated equitably. Case studies of aid recipients, including Ireland, Italy's Mezzogiorno, Spain's Murcia region, East Germany, England's Kent, and France's Nord-Pas de Calais, are presented.
