New rules to cut hassle, expense of trades in EU: financial firms face greater competition as arena is transformed

The European Union has eliminated significant barriers that have governed stock trading among EU members, bringing trading rules more in line with those of the US. Changes include the prohibition of national monopolies that had previously enabled stock exchanges to demand large fees. The elimination of restrictions is expected to reduce trading costs by as much as 25% over the next year.
