Mergers and acquisitions
Article Abstract:
The Economic Council of Canada has launched a pilot research project investigating mergers and acquisitions. It has been argued by Canadian business people that concentration of industry is necessary to meet the pressures of international competition, and project head Abe Tarasofsky believes that the project is necessary to ascertain whether increasing concentration is healthy for the Canadian economy. The study will research stock market and accounting data to determine whether acquired firms become more profitable subsequent to being acquired. Tarasofsky states that preliminary results indicate that takeovers are not a particularly good way to promote efficiency: approximately 40% of acquired firms experience improved performance, approximately 40% experience deteriorating performance, and approximately 20% experience no change in performance.

Survey knocks the hospitality industry
Article Abstract:
The government's 'Britain at Work' report has revealed that employees in the hospitality industry are more likely to walk out of their job or be fired than the average employee in the UK. Hotels and restaurants fire 6% of their workforce every year. Problems encountered by staff include rude clients, moodiness in the kitchen and unsympathetic management. The British Hospitality Association has recently launched a directory which lists good employers in the hospitality industry.
