New technology and products - the revolution has just begun
Article Abstract:
The communications industry is growing at a rate unheard of in the past, with electronic telecommunications systems providing international corporations with access to information on an almost-immediate basis, but the wave of new technological products has placed considerable demands on senior managers charged with selecting the best system and products for their organization. Among the questions that must be considered are: what is the best system for the company; is the system flexible and expandable; what is the best transmission media; what size system and level of technology is required for the particular installation; and which of the competing technologies is most likely to survive and be supported in the future. Examples of managers' use of different telecommunications systems are described.

Extending managers' power: the corporate telecommunications revolution
Article Abstract:
Information processing and communications technology innovations have allowed managers to tap into the happenings throughout an organization regardless of the distance between their different operations using electronic mail systems and database access over telephone lines. Even if the advancement of these technologies in business has been spotty and irregular, it is still a trend well worth noting and considering if only for the fast and inexpensive information transmission the technology makes possible. Examples of how international companies use these technologies are described, with systems discussed in use at IBM's British operations, Digital Equipment Co. Ltd. of Great Britain, Club Mediterranee in France, and Siemens AG of West Germany.
