New wars and old
Article Abstract:
The US has increased defense spending but there is still a lack of will to tackle difficult issues and set priorities. Anti-missile defenses are needed due to North Korea and Iran's activities in missile development. Issues related to staffing and maintenance have to be tackled and there is a need for more spending on information systems and electronics. The Pentagon has not adjusted rapidly enough to changes in defense needs. The administration should make decisions in the national interest rather than allowing hardware to be ordered for reasons of political favoritism.

Rockets overhead
Article Abstract:
The development of missile systems in North Korea and elsewhere represents a threat. Both Iran and North Korea are involved in the development of long-range missiles, and the US, Japan and South Korea have warned North Korea of the dangers of carrying out tests. Israeli and US scientists are seeking methods to halt missiles in flight. Anti-missile protection networks could become important. Defense decisions could be affected by whether or not a country is vulnerable to missiles, and this could lead to divisions in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
