News of Bates win helps send Saatchi shares up 5%

Bates Worldwide, parent company of Saatchi & Saatchi, has been named lead agency worldwide on the Lucky Strike account of Brown & Williamson of the United States and parent British-American Tobacco (BAT) of the United Kingdom. The account, which some report to be worth up to $100 million, was previously managed by different agencies, including Bates. BAT obtained the global rights to Pall Mall and Lucky Strike in late 1994 for $1 billion.

Philip Morris smokers' rights ads has EC fuming

The European Commission has reacted very strongly to a pan-European print ad campaign by US tobacco company Philip Morris which promotes smokers' rights. One of the ads is particularly critical of European legislation on smoking, implying that it is excessively bureaucratic and infringes personal liberty. The European Commission has reacted by stating that Philip Morris does not understand how the European Union operates.

Critics attack Philip Morris' passive smoking ad campaign

A new advertising campaign by cigarette company Philip Morris stating that passive smoking is harmless has been condemned by health groups throughout Europe. The campaign ranks passive smoking in the same risk category as eating hot peppers and drinking milk. Philip Morris has a 30% share of the European Union's cigarette market. The press advertisements were created by advertising agency Bainsfair Sharkey Trott London.
