Macedonia is yet another ancient state trying to recreate itself from the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Problems it faces include an insecure Serb population and a powerful Albanian one. Its chances for survival do not appear as good as those of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

Macedonia remains unrecognized as an independent republic, and there are fears that a lack of diplomatic ties with other countries may lead to economic hardship. Albanians in Macedonia may become involved in fighting that may erupt in Kosovo.
