Article Abstract:
Internet stocks rose in price in early 1999, but have since fallen. There is still optimism about the stock price performance of some Internet stocks like eBay and Amazon. Interest rate rises have affected the stock market as a whole, some analysts argue. There are also problems in valuing Internet companies. The Internet has had a major impact on the economy, and some Internet stocks may be good investments, but companies that are pioneers do not always reap the rewards of their efforts.

It is too soon to determine the causes of the crash that hit stock exchanges around the world at the end of Oct 1997. The chain reaction appeared to be due to panic by traders, interconnections of the global economy and diminished sensitivity to investment risk.
